چکیده

The effect of dentifrices and toothbrushing on the wear of enamel, exposed dentin, and cementum has been the topic of extensive experimental research.1-3 Little attempt has been made, however, to study the mechanisms that control the surface failure of enamel under an applied stress that results primarily from sliding. To identify the wear phenomenon of enamel at the level of slip or cleavage interactions or both requires a simplified system that is not influenced by variable or undetermined effects (for example, dentifrice composition and the rate of brushing). Single crystals have been used in industry for the past decade to study the phenomenon of wear.46 Bowden, Brookes and Hanwell7,8 studied the plowing friction and surface damage of diamond and MgO single crystals. By sliding conical diamonds with various apical angles on known crystallographic surfaces in specified directions, they related frictional anisotropy and surface damage to specific slip and cleavage interactions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a method for characterizing the surface fail-

Wear of fluorapatite single crystals. VI. Influence of multiple-pass sliding on surface failure.

One approach to a fundamental study of the wear of a material is to investigate the frictional behavior and surface failure of a simplified system, such as single crystals, under conditions of single-pass sliding. Such an approach has been used to study the influence of sliding direction and environment on the surface failure of fluorapatite single crystals.1.2 A useful extension of this single...

Wear of fluorapatite single crystals: IV. Influence of sliding direction on frictional behavior and surface failure.

Preliminary studies of the wear of fluorapatite single crystals subjected to sliding neglected the possible influence of crystallographic direction on the frictional behavior and surface failure of the basal plane.1-3 In these studies, possible anisotropic effects were considered to contribute to the experimental error in the analysis of the data. Buckley4 has observed that friction coefficient...

Wear of fluorapatite single crystals. V. Influence of environment on frictional behavior and surface failure.

In recent years, several investigations of the environment-sensitive mechanical behavior of certain crystalline, nonmetallic materials and glasses have been directed toward characterizing the wear behavior of these materials under conditions of sliding and drilling in active liquid environments. Buckley,' for example, examined the change in plastic deformation and friction coefficient of single...

Evaluation of Microstructure and Wear Behavior of Iron-based Hard - facing Coatings on the Mo40 Steel

Mo40 low-alloy steels are mostly used to produce industrial components such as crane wheels which are exposed to abrasive wear. However, during working conditions, their wear resistance is reduced after a while due to its low hardness. With increasing abrasive wear, the dimensions of components decrease and they need to be repaired for surface modification. In this regard, hard overlay coatings...

Wear of fluorapatite single crystals. II. Frictional behavior.

It is a convenient approximation to regard the frictional forces between two solids as made up of two components: the force required to shear adhering junctions in the region of surface contact and the force required to deform the underlying bulk material.' With an elastic solid, the deformation component may be due mainly to an elastic hysteresis loss; but if plastic flow occurs, the deformati...
